Planning for Clean Air

B.C. is home to the first Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP) in Canada –Metro Vancouver’s AQMP was adopted in 1994, with the goal of reducing common air contaminants by 38% from 1985 levels by 2000. Through a variety of programs, as well as new technologies and education/awareness programs, they achieved their target.

AQMPs are evolving and becoming more common with the recognition that many different people, activities, industries, and sources contribute to air pollution, and that a shared, collaborative approach is needed to manage air quality.

In the Sea-to-Sky and Howe Sound Airshed, the AQMP process began in a 2002 scoping document produced by the B.C. Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection (now Ministry of Environment) entitled “Framework for Air Quality Management Planning in the Sea-to-Sky Airshed

This led to the development of the Sea-to-Sky Air Quality Management Plan.

In 2011, the BC Ministry of Environment also released the B.C. Smoke Management Framework, which outlines and describes a cross-government approach to reduce human exposure to smoke from biomass burning (i.e. wood smoke).
