B.C. is home to the first Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP) in Canada –Metro Vancouver’s AQMP was adopted in 1994, with the goal of reducing common air contaminants by 38% from 1985 levels by 2000. Through a variety of programs, as well as new technologies and education/awareness programs, they achieved their target.
AQMPs are evolving and becoming more common with the recognition that many different people, activities, industries, and sources contribute to air pollution, and that a shared, collaborative approach is needed to manage air quality.
In the Sea-to-Sky and Howe Sound Airshed, the AQMP process began in a 2002 scoping document produced by the B.C. Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection (now Ministry of Environment) entitled “Framework for Air Quality Management Planning in the Sea-to-Sky Airshed”
This led to the development of the Sea-to-Sky Air Quality Management Plan.
In 2011, the BC Ministry of Environment also released the B.C. Smoke Management Framework, which outlines and describes a cross-government approach to reduce human exposure to smoke from biomass burning (i.e. wood smoke).
