Village of Pemberton

1.1) Do you support the creation of TDM through smart growth planning and changes to infrastructure such as increasing sidewalks and bike paths and identifying new park & ride areas? If yes, what specific outcomes do you support? If no, why not?

Decreasing the amount of cars on the road improves the health of a community in more ways than one.  I support completing the trail network that will provide a safe bike/walk route from Mount Currie through to the village.  We have a downtown enhancement strategy that includes improving sidewalks and accessibility and I would like to see the concept become a reality.

1.2) Do you support marketing tools like carpooling and school bike plans and promoting events such as bike to work week and car-free days in the town centre? If yes, what specific tools do you support? If no, why not?

Absolutely!  A well-utilized rideshare program would be of benefit to the community, especially with the amount of people in the community that commute to Whistler.  During the snow free months a school bike program would be amazing.  A car-free day in the downtown would be a great opportunity to close the streets off and bring to life with entertainment and an expanded farmers market.

2.1) Do you ride local or regional buses on a regular basis (public transit or private carriers)? If not, what would be required for you to start taking the bus? (For example:  better schedule, different routes, lower cost? Or other?)

From time to time I do take the bus into Whistler and back.  I’m currently living where I do not need to use my car on a regular basis.   The common issue I hear from people is that the bus schedule does not work for them.

2.2) Do you support the development of an inter-regional transit plan that would integrate services in communities from Metro Vancouver and the Squamish Lillooet Regional District (from West Vancouver to Mount Currie)?

I am open to the idea if it improves service, gets more people onto transit and improves affordability.

2.3) What would a successful inter-regional plan look like to you?

A successful inter-regional plan would have scheduling that increases use, improves affordability and gets cars off the road.

3.1) How would you encourage the use of more efficient standards and greener technology for new and retrofitted industries in your community?

Air quality policies in regards to industry are not my area of expertise, however I do support bylaws, zoning and retrofitting of vehicles that decrease the negative impact industry can have on air quality.

4.1) How will you ensure that all new residential and commercial development occurs in existing developed areas, thereby increasing walkability and proximity to shops and services?

Pemberton’s Industrial area, fortunately, is not located directly next to a dense residential area.  Focusing on the Frontier Street Master Plan will bring more life to downtown, encouraging non-industrial business to thrive in a core area.  Our official community plan has recently been completed and I believe it is a great resource to work from when it comes to making future decisions in regards to zoning.

4.2) What policies do you think will be most effective at reducing our community’s impact on air quality?

Our recently completed Official Community Plan, that includes Smart Growth initiatives, is a great guiding document when it comes to land use and zoning.  Improving transit options, looking at ways to improve waste management policies and bringing forth a no idling bylaw are ways in which our community can lessen our impact on air quality.

5.1) The Province of BC is considering a province-wide ban on the use of cosmetic pesticides. Regardless of the outcome, would you support a local bylaw banning pesticide use in your community?

Absolutely.

5.2) Would you support adopting a similar backyard burning bylaw(s) in (Pemberton/SLRD Electoral Areas)?

Yes.  I believe cosmetic pesticides are completely unnecessary.  I would support a bylaw that limits backyard burning and in regards to wood burning stoves, I think requiring new installs to be certified is a a great idea along with implementing an exchange program.

1.1) Do you support the creation of TDM through smart growth planning and changes to infrastructure such as increasing sidewalks and bike paths and identifying new park & ride areas? If yes, what specific outcomes do you support? If no, why not?

Pemberton has a great network of trails today.  I support a paved, lit commuter trail connecting the Plateau and Glen neighbourhoods into the village core; today those living in the Plateau must ride their bikes on the highway to get into town on their own steam.  I also support increased transit service and would like to see smaller buses servicing our community to decrease costs and accommodate our riders.

1.2) Do you support marketing tools like carpooling and school bike plans and promoting events such as bike to work week and car-free days in the town centre? If yes, what specific tools do you support? If no, why not?

Yes, enabling our community to move around Pemberton and to and from Whistler without needing their own car is important.

2.1) Do you ride local or regional buses on a regular basis (public transit or private carriers)? If not, what would be required for you to start taking the bus? (For example:  better schedule, different routes, lower cost? Or other?)

I live and work in the village so don’t often use my car or the bus.  I would use the bus to go into Whistler for occasional evening events or morning hockey drop-in sessions if there were routes mid morning and later into the evening.

2.2) Do you support the development of an inter-regional transit plan that would integrate services in communities from Metro Vancouver and the Squamish Lillooet Regional District (from West Vancouver to Mount Currie)?

Yes, with the relatively small number of people we have living in such a large area I think the best chance for a successful transit plan is if we all work together to pool resources, connections and ideas.

2.3) What would a successful inter-regional plan look like to you?

3.1) How would you encourage the use of more efficient standards and greener technology for new and retrofitted industries in your community?

4.1) How will you ensure that all new residential and commercial development occurs in existing developed areas, thereby increasing walkability and proximity to shops and services?

I encourage development in the areas we have currently zoned for residential and commercial use.  The Pemberton valley is challenged in terms of conflicting land use as we have a combination of residential, commercial and agricultural lands located in a river valley with flood risks.  Agricultural land is invaluable for Pemberton and BC as a whole and must be protected.  Trails and connectivity between the village centre and developments along the highway should be required as we expand.
