| Wood-burning Appliances In 1994, BC Environment (now called the Ministry of Environment) passed a regulation aimed at keeping smoke from new wood stoves to a minimum. The Solid Fuel Burning Domestic Appliance Regulation specifies particulate emission limits, and labeling and testing requirements for new wood stoves, fireplace inserts and factory built fireplaces manufactured in B.C., or sold or imported for use in B.C.. So far, B.C. has been the only province to pass such a law. However, there are still many old un-certified woodstoves still in use in this province. To address this issue, programs like Burn-It-Smart and woodstove change-outs have been made available to communities to provide incentives for burning smoke-free and using environmentally-friendly woodstoves.
